Uttar Pradesh’s experienced thrower Tanya Chaudary won women’s hammer throw gold with a meet record of 54.42m on the opening day of the fourth edition of Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition here at Patliputra Sports Complex on Saturday. The second meet record of the day was set in the women’s triple jump by Maharashtra’s Poorva Hitesh Sawant whose gold medal winning jump was 13.25m.
Away from the field events, Odisha’s sprinter Animesh Kujur clocked 10.38 seconds in men’s 100m semifinal round to better the meet record of 10.39 seconds in the name of Pranav Gurav recorded in 2022.
Tanya, 21, opening throw of 54.42m fetched her gold medal with a meet record. The Uttar Pradesh thrower was steady in her performance today and had a series of 54.42m, 54.36m, no mark, 54.41m, 53.92 and no mark.
Tanya has a personal best of 63.16m recorded in 2023 while her season best this year was 61.57m recorded in June in Panchkula. She finished seventh at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
The second meet record was recorded at the triple jump arena. Maharashtra promising jumper Poorva Hitesh Sawant best jump of the day was 13.25m, which was better than the previous record of 13.16m set in 2023 by Avinash Parule.
Poorva got her rhythm right in her last attempt, which was a meet record. She had a series of 12.89m, 12.24m, 12.40m, 12.59m, 12.60m and 13.25m.
Earlier during the morning session, Haryana’s Puneet Yadav won the gold in the men’s 10,000m race. His winning time was 30:10.96 seconds. The women’s 10,000m gold went to Anchal Jaiswal of Uttar Pradesh. She clocked 36:25.12 seconds.
Later in the evening session heavy downpour temporarily halted the events.
