Like other teams participating in the 2025 Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series at Wrigley Field in Chicago this weekend, the University of Michigan men’s team is rolling out special jerseys for the occasion. But the Wolverines are going out to left field with their baseball-inspired duds.

While other teams have gone with the more traditional baseball look of a script logo across the chest, Michigan is instead drawing inspiration from the road uniforms that Wrigley Field’s usual tenants, the Chicago Cubs, wore in the 1980s.

Those road jerseys were a blue pullover style with a “CUBS” logo on the left chest. Similarly, the Wolverines jerseys unveiled on Wednesday, January 1, are primarily yellow with the school’s navy blue block M logo on the left chest.

The yellow jerseys have a white collar with navy blue trim and a navy blue insert at the front. White and navy blue stripes run around each sleeve. The right sleeve has a navy blue player number with white outlines in the Cubs’ usual font, while the right sleeve has a patch of Biff the Wolverine. All these elements are designed to mimic those found on the Cubs’ jersey from the 1980s.

Adding to the effect are the socks, which are yellow with navy blue panels on the front and back to make it look like players are wearing stirrups.

The numbers on the back of the jersey mirror those on the right sleeve — navy blue with white outlines and set in the Cubs’ font. Names on the back are also navy blue with white outlines and arched over the number.

The graphic posted on Wednesday didn’t indicate what colour pants or gloves will be worn with the yellow jersey. But the Wolverines posted a photo on Thursday, January 2, showing the jersey with their blue-and-yellow winged helmet at Wrigley Field.

UPDATE (3:56 p.m. MT; January 3, 2024): With the Ohio State-Michigan game underway, the Wolverines are wearing navy blue pants and gloves with their yellow Frozen Confines jerseys.
